Louis Vuitton, a name synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship, has a rich history in creating iconic travel pieces. Among these, the Malle Auto trunks stand out as early masterpieces of design and functionality, reflecting the brand's legacy and commitment to excellence.

The Malle Auto, introduced at the beginning of the 20th century, was designed to meet the needs of the emerging era of automobile travel. With the increase in cars, there was a growing demand for durable and fashionable luggage that could withstand the rigors of road trips. Louis Vuitton, always at the forefront, responded with the Malle Auto, a trunk that combined robustness and elegance.

For the car's trunk, Louis Vuitton offered catalog models such as the Autoski trunk - later renamed Excelsior - which could be attached to the rear of many cars and contained three travel suitcases. The trunk was loaded outside the car, but the suitcases remained protected inside, only being removed once at the destination. The roof trunks, on the other hand, were larger and had to be custom-made to fit the car's dimensions.

Each trunk is still a testament to the Maison's attention to the needs of its clientele. Made with high-quality materials such as solid wood and covered with waterproof black plain canvas, they were designed to preserve their contents. The metal finishes, reinforced corners, and locking mechanisms were designed to ensure the security of the contents, while the interior often featured customizable compartments.

Most were produced in plain-colored canvas called Vuitonite, as it could be ordered in the same color as the customer's car. The cars of the time were essentially black, so many automotive models are found today in black Vuitonite. This very durable canvas could remain outdoors and was therefore suitable for use in this type of luggage, which was loaded onto special external luggage racks. A single piece of canvas was used to avoid creating corners or creases where water or dust could stagnate, and for the same reason, there were no metal edges or corners. In short, an early system to ensure a sort of airtight seal for the trunk.

These trunks were favored by the elite and have been seen accompanying some of the most famous personalities in history.
